Markthal; The building

THE BIRTH OF AN ICON.

The Markthal is the first covered market floor in the Netherlands. A place where good food and unique living come together in a spectacular arch. After five years of construction, the iconic fresh market opened its doors on 1 October 2014.

WHY THE MARKTHAL?

Due to new European regulations, the sale of, for example, fish, meat and cheese in the open air had to meet increasingly stringent requirements. This moment was seized by Rotterdam to start a particularly ambitious project on 19 November 2009: the construction of the most unique fresh market in the world.

ON THE 19th OF NOVEMBER 2009 THE CONSTRUCTION STARTED

PAST AND FUTURE IN ONE PLACE

Near the Rotte - the place where Rotterdam was founded in the year 1270 - stone by brick erected the recognizable arch shape of the Markthal. During the preparation of the construction, all kinds of medieval objects were found; from vases and tools to numerous cannon balls. Objects that you can still view from the escalators and in the parking garage of the Markthal.

THE BIGGEST ARTWORK IN THE WORLD

The special shape of the building appeals to the imagination, but that certainly applies to the inside. Artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam created the largest artwork in the world: the Horn of Plenty, the cornucopia. With its surface of 11,000 m2 and bright colors, the creation is now also known as 'the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam'.
